URUGUAY and
ARGENTINA
- a VISIT
Written and translated by Luis Fernando Carvajal
I had the opportunity to visit Uruguay and Argentina last November. That was my first visit to the southern part of South America.
This journey had two objectives, the first for my work and the second for pleasure. The 24th Congress of Hydraulics was held in Uruguay. This is the most important event in Latin America for those working in Hydraulics.
The congress was held in Punta Del Este. This is a coastal city on the Atlantic Ocean. This area is as tourist as the best places in the world. I was there for just five days, a short period of time but I took a good lasting impression of the place.

At first sight Punta Del Este looks pretty quiet. I was there at the end of the spring, so there were not a lot of people around. The summer season, so far down in the south, is from December to March.
Punta Del Este
Punta Del Este is a small city with enough facilities to cater for a lot of people. A tourist guide told our group that the regular population is about ten thousand inhabitants and in the summer season the population can reach up to a million people.
This enormous crowd needs to be provided with all services. You can see a lot of hotel, condos, restaurants and private houses of famous people. Many people from Montevideo go to work in Punta Del Este in the summer.
Uruguay is a little country, Colombia is six times bigger than Uruguay, so the distances are short and it is easy to travel across Uruguay. Punta Del Este is visited by Argentinean, Brazilian and European people.
Palacio Legislativo, Montevideo
Basically the typical food is the grill (this is a kind of menu with different parts of roast beef). Also, Uruguayan people like wine and good beer very much.
Uruguay is a country with more cattle than inhabitants. The ratio can be 4 cows to one inhabitant. The topography is mainly flat. Another item of interest is that this city generates sixty five percent of Uruguay´s income from tourism. After these days I spent one day in Montevideo, the capital. This city is not so big and the tourist part is limited.
A very important note from Uruguay is that the country produces very good footballers. Many of these play in European teams. Also, Uruguay has been twice champion of the football world cup. This happened many years ago in 1930 and 1950.
Diego Forlán
The 1950 tournament is still remembered because Uruguay won it when it was held in Brazil and the final game was against the Brazilian team. The score was two to one. This was devastating for the Brazilian fans.
ARGENTINA
After Uruguay I went to Argentina for five days. To travel between Montevideo and Buenos Aires you need to take a bus from Montevideo to the port of Colonia, this trip takes two hours. Once you are there you can take a boat. The second part lasts an hour. The total cost by land and out the ship cost fifty-five US dollars.
When you arrive in Buenos Aires Port, immigration is easy and fast. The tourist part of Buenos Aires is near the Port. You can see the best trade and commercial centers of the city with banks and different places for buying and eating.

The main street is the Avenue 9th of July and at the junction with Avenue Corrientes is the obelisk. This is one of the most important monuments in Buenos Aires. It is four-sided; each side is located toward a point of the compass (north, south, east, and west) and each represents a historic event in Argentina´s history.

Some other tourist sites in Buenos Aires are the San Telmo and La Boca neighborhoods, Theater Colon, the Pink House where the president and the government have their offices.
Casa Rosada, Buenos Aires
San Martin Square is very big and nice, people go there to read and take a rest at any time of the day. The First of May Square is the place where mothers whose sons died in the seventies under the military regime in Argentina gather to claim justice.
The tango is a famous part of Argentina’s culture and it is well known around the world. The most famous tango singer is Carlos Gardel. Both France and Uruguay claim to be his country of birth but it is Argentina that made him famous. He died in Medellin, Colombia in an air crash in 1935.
Also, the Argentina football team has won the world cup twice, in 1978 in its own country and in 1986 in Mexico. This country produces very good footballers too.
Lionel Messi
The old neighborhoods and buildings have European architecture from the beginning of the last century. Among the typical Argentinean dishes are grilled and meat empanadas. You can get to know the city by walking but be alert for dog poop, for while you are looking at the top part of the buildings you must be careful with poop on the ground.
Another good place is El Tigre Ciudad. This is an hour from Buenos Aires by train. You go there and take a day off with a voyage on a boat through the Parana River delta and visit the fruit market.
I had a very brief journey and I only visited the capitals. There are many other sites of interest in Argentina for those who like eco-tourism, for example, the Province of Tierra del Fuego whose capital is Ushuaia, La Pampa, Argentina in the northern part of the country and the Iguazu Falls in the border between Argentina and Brazil. A journey back will be great.
