La construcción del tiempo pasado progresivo es:

Pasado simple de ‘to be’ [was o were] más el participio presente

(también llamado el gerundio) del verbo activo.

Es probable que en muchos de estos casos la frase en español se expresaría en otro tiempo o de otra manera, pero las traducciones aquí son correctos usos en inglés.

1.   He was working in the workshop when it happened.

2.   I was buying shoes when I lost my purse.

3.   They were watching the yachts when one (of them)  sank.

4.   We were putting flowers on the table when she arrived.

5.   You were writing when he switched off the light.

6.   The cows were running when the farmer fell over

7.   They were arriving at the dock when the accident happened.

8.   We were buying furniture when he fainted.

9.   He was fishing happily when the police saw him.

10. I was washing my hair when she arrived.

11. They were speaking English before you were born.

12. You were listening on your earphones and didn’t hear me.

13. She was writing books before I knew her.

14. The boy was tying his shoe laces when he stumbled.

15. He was telling a joke while you listened.

17. The women were dancing and the boys joined in.

18. He knew he was taking a risk when he bought the car.
