SOUNDS OF TWO

VOWELS TOGETHER

IN ENGLISH

AA to UU

In English when we have two vowels together they normally produce only one sound. Most of these combinations have more than one version of sound and each version is shown by number: 1)   2) etcetera. The combination 'IE', for example, produces five different versions.

You will not learn all the various sounds in a week or two, but you will learn through practice and observation as native speakers do.

Sometimes they produce two sounds, like chaos (ko-os), society (sos-ai-ete) or riot (rai-ot), but these are not common.

This lesson shows all the possible combinations of vowels in sequence from

AA to UU.

It also shows the phonetic (sound) in blue and some examples of words in the English language that demonstrate this sound.

To keep the list short I have simplified some sounds. For example, I don’t mention diphthongs because I don’t think these will help you learn English as a second language.

In all these cases where there is only one sound, you should make the sound longer. The double vowel tells us that the sound is not short.
