TEACHERS OF ENGLISH
Profesores del inglés
John James Carty writes:
This is a section which I hope will be of interest to teachers of English. As I write this, the website is only a month old so I’m not sure what form this part of the site will eventually take.
In this section we have articles that may not be of interest to the general reader or student but I hope will please some English teachers. Although I get a bit weary deciding what material is for beginners or intermediate or advanced level, I think we can say that everything is this corner of the site is advanced.
I start with my favorite ‘hobby horse’. I’m not sure that the dictionary definition of this phrase, “A favorite fixed idea or obsession” is exactly right but I do believe that old English literature should not be taught to general students of English as a foreign language (ESL).
The review of ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ by Charles Dickens is my detailed attempt to explain my ‘obsession’.
In accordance with my slogan ‘Read English Last’ I publish the article in Spanish first and then in English. It was written for an English – speaking audience and is not tailored or modified to suit students.
I hope it will be of interest to you and of course I would be delighted if you could use it – or parts of it – with your more advanced students. I certainly have no objection to really advanced students reading English literature. My article explains why.
